Memorize! Review

Consistently and constantly reviewing Scripture is an essential element to growing spiritually. Now you can use your Pocket PC to help you keep track of and memorize Scripture using Memorize!. Memorize!, distributed by Laridian who also distributes PocketBible, helps you keep a list of Scripture verses, memorize those verses and review them. You can enter Scripture verses and categorize them to suit your needs. You then can view the list of all the verses you have entered or verses in a specific category. You can review and test as many or as few verses in your list as you want.

Using Memorize!

The main screen of Memorize! shows the list of verses. The first line displays the current category. You can change which category is displayed by tapping on that line and selecting the category you want or select "All Categories" to display all verses. Along with using the buttons at the bottom of the screen to review or test a verse, you can double tap a verse to review or test a verse. You can select which one you want to happen by choosing the appropriate option in the Options (View > Options > General).

Adding a new verse

Adding a verse is quick and straight forward. There are three ways to add a verse: 1. Double tap on "Add a New Item" in the verse list; 2. Tap on the plus at the bottom of the screen; 3. Select "Add..." from the Edit menu. After you have done that, enter the reference and translation of the verse you wish to memorize or review. You can also enter a Topic, a Category, and a Hint if you wish. The topic is displayed next to the translation in the list of verses. The Hint is used to help yourself recall the verse when you use the testing feature of Memorize!. You also enter the text of the verse in the same screen. You can enter verses that span whole chapters or multiple chapters. Of course, you can always go back and edit any verse you've added by using the Edit menu option or the the pencil icon at the bottom of the screen.

One of the best features of Memorize! is being able to import the verse from PocketBible instead of having to type it in. After entering the reference and the translation, tap "PocketBible Import" and the verse will be entered in. Entering abbreviations or just part of the book name will work. If you use an abbreviation it doesn't know or misspell the name, a message will tell you it doesn't recognize what you entered. Tapping on "PocketBible Import" again replaces the current text with the imported text. That makes it easy to use a different translation or change the reference.

Although Memorize! is designed for memorizing the Bible, it is not limited to just Scripture references. You can use Memorize! for anything you wish to memorize. Memorize Shakespeare or your favorite poet. Memorize! can use multiple files or collections, each containing their own set of verses. You can have a collection containing favorite verses and another collection containing poems.

Reviewing a verse

To review a verse, tap on the desired verse, and either tap on the light bulb icon at the bottom of the screen or tap on "View" and then "Review...". You will see the reference, the translation, the topic, and the full verse. You can page through the verses in the selected category by using the "<< Previous" and "Next >>" buttons. Tapping in the upper-left hand of the screen will change the category of the verses that are being displayed. Tap on the "OK" or "X" button to return to the list of verses.

Testing a verse

Testing a verse can show how well you know the verse. Select a verse, tap the check mark at the bottom of the screen or tap on "View" and then "Test...". The reference, the translation, and topic of the verse is displayed along with the following directions, "Write the first letter of each word in the verse." When you write the correct letter, the word is displayed; if you write the wrong letter, you hear a beep. For example, if the verse starts with "And this is what God has testified:..." write "a", "t", "i", "w", "g", "h", "t". You don't need to worry about punctuation or capitals. If you get stuck, you have three options. 1. Tap "Hint" to display the hint you entered for the verse. 2. Tap "Help" to display the next word of the verse. 3. Tap "Show" to display the whole verse. There is a retry option to test the same verse again when whole verse is shown by writing it all out or by tapping on "Show". You can page through the verses in the selected category by using the "<< Previous" and "Next >>" buttons. Tapping in the upper-left hand of the screen will change the category of the verses that are being displayed. Tap on the "OK" or "X" button to return to the list of verses.

Backing up

The Backup function provides the ability to back up your collection of verses (which is stored in three different files) to your computer. More importantly, it provides an easy way to move your collection from one device to another and ensure the collection will work on the other device.

Conclusion

Memorize! is an easy to use program that you can use to suit your needs. Use it to help you memorize Scripture, keep a list of favorite verses, or both. Being able to actually test your memory, the import feature, and being able to use multiple files set this program far and above any list or database program used to keep Scripture verses. Although the main purpose of Memorize! is to help you memorize Scripture verses, it is also very useful for keeping a list of Scripture verses for easy reference. Memorize! adds another powerful element in using a Pocket PC device for spiritual growth.
